The word tourmaline originate from “tura Mali” from Sinhalese language and the meaning of this word is a stone has many blended color in it. The tourmaline prices varies from cheap to expensive, the variety, which are rare they are expensive while the others are economical. The paraiba tourmaline, which is also known as neon blue is highly expensive and reason behind is its rarity. The main source of paraiba was Brazil. However, now it occurs in Nigeria and Mozambique. Tourmalines reservoirs are located all over the world while the main deposits are in Brazil, Sri Lanka and South and south west Africa where as it is also present in Afghanistan, California, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Tourmalines is available in different shades and colors and because of this the price of this valuable gemstone varies according to its shade. Tourmalines have various color and shades that is why gems lovers like this gem stone. Tourmaline has long range of colors and the meaning of tourmaline is stone having different colors. The most abundant colors of this gem stone are red, green, blue and yellow while usually it is a mixture of two colors. The black color tourmaline provide protection from dangerous rays. The tourmaline combines with two color is known as bi colored tourmaline where as those combine with more than two colors is called multicolored tourmaline. It is most precious and valuable because of its color and shades. The unique features of tourmaline is that it changes its color if viewed from other angles.

Tourmaline hardness range is from seven to 7.5 Mohs, the gem stone has transparent to opaque characteristic. The gem stone belong to mineral class tourmaline.

Tourmaline gem stone has many classical varieties just as achroite, which is colorless tourmaline, yellow tourmaline, which is known as canary, blue tourmaline famous as Indicolite and pink and red tourmaline known as rubellite.
