ALKHOBAR: They say a diamond is a girl’s best friend, but a new exhibition at the Sultan bin Abdulaziz Science and Technology Center shows that agate is the gemstone that best embodies femininity.
Saudi artist Esmat Mohsen Almohandis, curator of the exhibition titled “Agat”, told Arab News: “Agate reflect the inner beauty of a woman.
” She explained that since most women love jewelry, agate seemed like a good subject for an exhibition of women artists.
According to the International Association of Colored Gemstones, “Agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet in ancient times.
It was said to quench thirst and prevent fever. Persian magicians used agate to protect against storms. Arabic folklore says that agate has healing properties and gives strength to its owner.
The exhibition, organized by Scitech in partnership with Alwan al-Sharqia, includes 70 paintings, all by women artists. Most of the artists are from Saudi Arabia, but there are also from neighboring Arab countries.
One of the participants, Hind al-Tharman, used sustainable materials in his work. “Because the theme of the exhibition was agate and women, I used agate as the lip color of the woman in (my) painting,” Al-Tharman told Arab News.
“My work was not painted on canvas, but on wood, on a table that I already had. It could be turned back into a table or displayed as a picture on the wall.
Much like the gemstone for which it is named, the exhibition is both beautiful and valuable. The paintings in the exhibition, when viewed sequentially, collectively use a fragmentary narrative of feminism and folklore to create a narrative depicting various milestones in the lives of many women, from marriage to motherhood, as well as depicting life’s trials and triumphs the era of COVID-19.
Like the gem it is named after, this exhibit is both beautiful and valuable.
