The Red beryl from Thomas Mountains are short and stout crystal, but crystal from Wah Wah range are elongated and considered best crystal. The chemical formula of this valuable gemstone is Be2Al2(SiO3)6 and the hardness of this stone is 7.5 to 8.0 on Moh’s Scale. However, there is difference between the different varieties because of impurities and it texture. Red beryl is found in elongated hexagonal crystals shape and have about 2-10 mm length and 2-6 mm width, but usually crystals of this stone is tiny, which is not considerd in gem range.
Red beryl or bixbite was discovered in 1904 from Thomas mountains in western Utah, United States of America. The name given to this stone was because of American mineralogist Maynard Bixby.
