The Largest Blue Sapphire in the world

The world largest blue Sapphire recently discovered from the Ratnapura. This blue sapphire is extracted from the gem pit situated just 45 km from the south of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Ratnapura is also famous for gems that are why it is called City of Gems. This place equipped huge deposits of precious and semi precious stones in Sri-Lanka.

The largest blue Sapphire in the world was discovered accidentally in this location. The construction workers were digging the land for a well and they found a rock where this valuable gemstone was placed. According to expert the weight of this largest blue Sapphire was 310 kilograms and given the name the Queen of Asia.

The Gemological Institute of Ratnapura inspected this blue Sapphire and the interior of this stone is a silky blue. That is clearly indicating that this is a blue sapphire. But, International organizations are still to certify the precious stone.

However, an authentication letter from Sri Lanka’s National Gem and Jewelry Authority read; “To our knowledge, this specimen is indeed a rare specimen and not recorded in the geological literature,” There are different factors which determine the price of any gemstone. However, the price of this blue sapphire can range in between$500 to $1,600 per carat.

According to the Institute’s president Chamila Suranga the price of this gemstone could be more than$100 million. The institute is looking to sound buyers, museums and rich collectors of gemstone in different regions of the world. Sri-Lankan gemstones are famous all over the world including Sapphire.

The Ceylon Sapphire was famous in world market due to its shiny blue color. Sri Lanka is earning about half a billion dollars through the export of gems, cut diamonds and jewelry. However, recent pandemic badly affect the gemstone market. However, Sri Lanka discovered many precious gemstones like world largest sapphire cluster.
