RIYADH: Inspired by the words of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi artist Sarah al-Zaidi spent five months creating his portrait using fantastic gems and other minerals collected from Jabal Tuwaiq, a mountain in the kingdom’s north.

Himmat Al-Jabal, which translates to “metal of the mountain”, was inspired by the crown prince’s remark that “the subtlety of the Saudi people is similar to that of Jabal Tuwaiq.

Jabal Tuwaiq is a long, steep slope crossing the Najd Plateau in central Arabia, which extends for about 800 kilometers from the Qasim region in the northwest of Riyadh to the northern edge of the Rub al-Khali (Desert Desert) in the south.

The valleys along Jabal Tuwaiq were home to communities centuries ago, and now the slopes are being touted as a destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Developing a passion for art at an early age, al-Zaidi created his own innovative expressive techniques. She collects stones such as obsidian, amber and quartz and uses them along with other items such as wood and shells to create impressive mosaic masterpieces.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman once remarked that “the subtlety of the Saudi people is like that of Jabal Tuwaiq.” The remark inspired a Saudi artist who collected gems and other minerals found in the area to create a stunning portrait of the crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi artist Sarah Alzaidi also created her portrait using gems and other minerals collected from the Kingdom’s northern mountain, Jabal Tuwaiq.
