Sotheby’s is calling a 555.55-carat black diamond believed to have come from outer space “The Enigma”. The rare gem was shown to reporters on Monday as part of a tour of Dubai and Los Angeles before it was auctioned off in London in February.
Sotheby’s expects the diamond to sell for at least 5 million British pounds ($6.8 million). The auction house also plans to accept cryptocurrency as a possible form of payment.
Sophie Stevens, Sotheby’s Dubai-based jewelry expert, told The Associated Press that the number five is significant for a diamond, which also has 55 facets.
“The diamond shape is based on the Middle Eastern Khamsa palm symbol, which means strength and protection,” she said Khamsa means five in Arabic.
“So there’s a good theme for number five going through the whole diamond,” she said. Stevens also said that the black diamond most likely came from outer space.
“With regard to carbonado diamonds, we believe that they were formed of extraterrestrial origin when meteorites fell to Earth and either created chemical vapor or the meteorites themselves,” she said.
